Meine Bücher 2019 | Books of 2019

2019 habe ich mir keine großen Vorsätze gesetzt. Doch ein kleines Ziel gab es: mindestens ein Buch pro Monat zu lesen, so wie ich es 2018 getan habe. Im Gegensatz zu 2018 habe ich aber nicht nur die zwölf Bücher pro Monat gelesen, sondern es sogar geschafft 23 zu lesen – also fast zwei pro Monat. Ich habe vor allem englische Bücher gelesen, mit ein/zwei Ausnahmen an deutschen Romanen und/oder Übersetzungen bsp. aus dem französischen. Daher ist für 2020 auch eines meiner großen Ziele wieder mehr deutsche oder französische Literatur zu konsumieren.

For 2019 I didn’t set myself that many intentions or resolutions. One main goal was to read at least one book per month, just like I did in 2018. Unlike 2018 I didn’t only read the twelve books per month but actually managed to read 23 – so almost two each month. I mainly read English books with one or two exceptions (mainly translations e.g. from the French). Thus one of my main goals is it to read more German and maybe even some French books in 2020.

So without further ado, here are the books I read in 2019:

WUTHERING HEIGHTS – EMILY BRONTE

Ich habe das Jahr mit einem Klassiker begonnen: Emily Brontës Liebesroman Wuthering Heights (auf Deutsch Sturmhöhe), der in den Mooren von Yorkshire, England, spielt. Ehrlich gesagt war mir die Story bei romantischer in Erinnerung geblieben, als sie bei diesem Mal lesen erschien. Aber ein großartiger Roman über Familie und die Dynamik der verbotenen Liebe.

I started the year with a classic: Emily Brontë’s romance novel Wuthering Heights placed in the moors of Yorkshire, England. Quite frankly I remembered it to be more romantic than it was reading it this time. However, a great novel on family and the dynamics of forbidden love.

CRAZY RICH ASIANS (1-3) – KEVIN KWAN

Eines DER Bücher des Jahres, dank der riesigen Verfilmung die zudem noch von einem All-Asian Cast realisiert wurde. Nachdem ich das erste Buch innerhalb weniger Tage verschlungen hatte, hat der Film mich leider etwas enttäuscht. Aber nicht davon abgehalten, auch den zweiten und Tritten Teil der Crazy Rich Asians Trilogie zu lesen.

One of the most talked about books the year in pop culture due to the all-Asian cast movie it was adapted into. While I didn’t like the movie I really enjoyed the Crazy Rich Asians Trilogy. My favourite one obviously was the first book but book 2 and 3 are also great light reads. Plus I always like a satire.

IN THE HOUSE IN THE DARK OF THE WOODS – LAIRD HUNT

Das verrückteste/experimentellste Buch das ich 2019 gelesen habe ist In the House in the Dark of the Woods. Ein Horror Märchen dass zur kolonial Zeit in New England spielt. Es startet ziemlich gut, aber hat mich leider nach einiger Zeit nicht mehr so sehr gefesselt. Eines der weniger guten Bücher für mich.

Probably the most crazy/experimental book I read in 2019. It’s a horror fairly tale set in colonial New England. And while it starts quite endearing, it did sadly not really catch me. Not the best one I read in 2019.

I KNOW A SECRET – TESS GERRITSEN

Ich habe tatsächlich noch nie eines der Rizzoli & Isles Bücher gelesen und war mir daher nicht so sicher, ob mir das Buch gefallen würde, als ich es als Empfehlung bekam. Aber ich muss sagen, es hat mich wirklich überrascht. Die Geschichte ist voll toller Bildsprache und einem spannenden Plot.

So I’ve never read any Rizzoli & Isles novels and wasn’t sure if I would even like this. But when I got the tip to read this book, I actually quite enjoyed it. Great imagery and a thrilling plot that actually wasn’t that easy to crack… or at least for me.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD – HARPER LEE

Ein weiterer Klassiker 2019 war To Kill a Mockingbird. Leider hat mich dieser Roman nicht so gefesselt wie gehofft und daher war ich etwas enttäuscht. Die Erzählperspektive von der eines kleinen Mädchens hat mich persönlich zu sehr vom eigentlichen Gesehen abgelenkt.

Another classic I read in 2019 was To Kill a Mockingbird. Sadly this one didn’t really catch me and I was a bit disappointed. The perspective of the little girl didn’t work for me but only distract me from the actual story.

DER ZOPF – LAETITIA COLOMBAN

Der Zopf (Original La Tresse) handelt von 3 komplett unterschiedlichen Frauen, an anderen Enden der Welt, deren Leben miteinander verbunden sind. Eine leichte Lektüre, die leider ab und zu etwas langwierig ist und etwas schnell vorhersehbar.

Der Zopf (Original La Tresse) is about three completely different women who live on the other sides of the world and yet their lives are intertwined. A light read that tends to get lengthy at times and also it is sadly rather foreseeable.

LOOKING FOR ALASKA – JOHN GREEN

Nachdem dieses Jahr die Serien-Adaption des YA Romans Looking for Alaska (Dt. Eine wie Alaska) herauskam, musste ich mein einstiges Lieblingsbuch wieder hervorholen und erneut lesen. Als ich 15/16 war, war dieses Buch von John Green mein absolutes Lieblingsbuch und John Green ist immer noch einer meiner liebsten Autoren. Es ist immer wieder spannend, ein Buch, das man als Teenager gelesen hat, als Erwachsener wieder zu lesen und die Thematiken und Probleme der Charaktere aus einem ganz anderen Licht zu entdecken. Aber gerade deshalb ist es nicht nur ein Buch für junge Erwachsene.

Due to the release of the series of this YA novel, I decided to re-read Looking for Alaska. It used to be my all time favourite book when I was around 15/16 and John Green remains to this day one of my favourite writers. Obviously reading this book about the lives and struggles of a group of teenagers as an adult I know understand things better and see them more clearly. But that’s exactly why it is not only a great novel for young adults but also for grown ups.

DER GENERAL IN SEINEM LABYRINTH – GABRIEL GARCÍA MÁRQUEZ

Wer Eine wie Alaska gelesen hat, weiß, dass Der General in seinem Labyrinth das meist erwähnte Buch innerhalb des Romans ist. Als ich John Greens Geschichte mit 15/16 das erste Mal las, habe ich mir sofort Gabriel García Márquez‘ Erfolgsroman geholt, doch um ehrlich zu sein, nicht wirklich verstanden. Nach dem ich also dieses Jahr nochmals Alaskas Geschichte gelesen hatte, war es natürlich für mich, direkt zum General überzugehen. Das Leiden, die Rückblicke und Erinnerungen an sein Leben sowie, die letzte Reise des großen Generals Simón Bolívar ist nicht nur traumhaft erzählt von Márquez sondern voller Parabeln und lässt einen auch nachdem man es gelesen hat nicht los.

Anyone who has read Looking for Alaska knows that The General in his Labyrinth is the most mentioned book within the novel. When I first read John Green’s story at 15/16, I immediately picked up Gabriel García Márquez’s successful novel, but to be honest, I didn’t really understand it. So after reading Alaska’s story again this year, it was natural for me to go straight to the General. The suffering, the retrospections and memories of his life and the last journey of the great General Simón Bolívar is not only dreamily told by Márquez, but also full of parables, and even after reading it you can’t let go.

COMFORT ZONES: STRONG WOMEN WRITERS TACKLING UNFAMILIAR GROUND

Diese Kollektion an Kurzgeschichten und Essays ist von mehrheitlich britischen Autorinnen geschrieben. Hintergrund der einzelnen Stories ist es, dass sich diese Frauen an neuen Themen oder Schreibstilen versuchen, die sie davor noch nicht angefasst haben. Die Komfortzone sozusagen zu verlassen. Leider wird es nach ungefähr der Hälfte etwas repetitiv. Natürlich nicht die einzelnen Geschichten oder Themen, aber einfach die Tatsache, dass man sich alle 10-20 Seiten auf eine neue Autorin und somit auch einen neuen Schreibstil einlassen muss. Es sind wirklich viele spannende Geschichten und Erzählungen dabei und durch dieses Buch bin ich auf Lindsey Hilsum gestoßen.

This collection of short stories and essays about female writers who try to write about a topic they’ve never tackled before or a style of writing really intrigued me. However after half of the book it starts getting somewhat repetitive. Not the stories or topics themselves just the whole set up of having a new story, new author and thus new style of writing every 10 pages. However through this book I encountered Lindsey Hilsum and her work.

IN EXTREMIS – THE LIFE OF WAR CORRESPONDENT MARIE COLVIN – LINDSEY HILSUM

Das erste Non-Fiction Buch des Jahres war die Biographie über die Kriegsreporterin Marie Colvin, die in den letzten Jahrzehnten alle großen Kriege begleitet und berichtet hat. Geschrieben ist diese spannende und auch nicht so leichte Biographie von ihrer Kollegin und Freundin Lindsey Hilsum. Keine leichte Kost aber dennoch eine große Empfehlung meinerseits.

The first non fiction book of this year was the biography of the war correspondent Marie Colvin, who covered all the major wars in the last decades. It is beautifully written though the topic itself not the easiest to digest, by her colleague and friend Lindsey Hilsum. Not an easy read but a big recommendation from my part.

TYLL – DANIEL KEHLMANN

Mein erstes Deutsches Buch das ich 2019 gelesen habe, war Tyll von Daniel Kehlmann. Der Roman soll zur Zeit des 30 jährigen Krieges spielen. Der Hauptcharakter ist zwar fiktional, doch inspiriert von Till Eulenspiegel. Eine tolle Geschichte, die einen zwar in dunklere Zeiten entführt, aber doch auch zum Lachen anregt.

The first German book I read in 2019 was Tyll by Daniel Kehlmann. It plays around the 30 year war that was between 1618 and 1648 in the whole of Europe. The main character is fictional however inspired by Till Eulenspiegel. A great novel that takes you back into darker times but still makes you laugh.

RED AT THE BONE – JACQUELINE WOODSON

Red at the Bone (Dt. Ein anderes Brooklyn) porträtiert die Geschichte einer Familie. Es springt in verschiedenen Zeitzonen und verschiedenen Perspektiven hin und her und ist gerade dadurch ein spannender Familien-Roman. Ein toller, moderner Erzählstil macht diese Comming of Age Story einer jungen Mutter und ihrer Tochter umso lebhafter.

Red at the Bone portrays the story of a family. It jumps back and forth in different time zones and different perspectives and is therefore an exciting family novel. A great, modern narrative style makes this Comming of Age story of a young mother and her daughter all the more vivid.

THE CRUELTY – SCOTT BERGSTROM

Ein etwas anderer Roman für mich: ein Action-Thriller. Nicht das, was ich sonst so lesen würde, aber nachdem ich auf Ibiza bereits nach einer Woche mit meiner Lektüre durch war, habe ich mich in der Hotel Bibliothek bedient und dieses Buch gefunden. Cruelty (so heißt der Roman auf Deutsch) war super spannend und vor allem war es mal lustig, etwas anderes zu lesen, als die dramatischen Lektüren, zu denen ich sonst so tendiere. Das Buch ist wohl Teil einer Reihe, allerdings würde ich weitere teile auch nur aus der Bibliothek leihen.

A somewhat different book for me: an action thriller. Not what I would normally read, but after I had finished all my books in Ibiza after only one week, I helped myself in the hotel library and found this book. The Cruelty was super exciting and above all it was fun to read something different than the dramatic readings I usually tend to do. The book is apparently part of a series, but I would only borrow the next parts from the library.

DIE PANNE – FRIEDRICH DÜRRENMATT

Nach den großen und teilweise schweren Romanen, brauchte ich eine kleine, komische Ablenkung. Die Panne vom Schweizer Autor Friedrich Dürrenmatt ist genau das. Eine verrückte Geschichte, die immer verrücktere Wendungen nimmt und die Grenzen zwischen Realität und Spiel verschwimmen lässt.

After the big and sometimes heavy novels, I needed a little comical diversion. Die Panne of the Swiss author Friedrich Dürrenmatt is just that. A crazy story that takes even crazier turns and blurs the boundaries between reality and play.

THREE WOMEN – LISA TADDEO

Eines DER Bücher von 2019 war Three Women (Deutsch Drei Frauen). Ein Nonfiction Buch über das wahre Leben drei unterschiedlicher Frauen, die Lisa Taddeo über 3 Jahre lang begleitet und aufgeschrieben hat. Das Buch liest sich mehr las ein Roman statt wahre Geschichten und handelt vor allem über die kaputten Beziehungen der Frauen zu Sex und ihrer eigenen Sexualität und wie sie sich selbst sehen. Obwohl es von so vielen Kritikern gelobt wurde, war es nicht mein Favorit dieses Jahr.

One of THE books from 2019 was Three Women. A nonfiction book about the real lives of three different women, which author Lisa Taddeo accompanied and wrote down for over 3 years. The book reads more like a novel than true stories and is mainly about the women’s broken relationships with sex and their own sexuality and how they see themselves. Although it was praised by so many critics, it was not my favorite this year.

MY YEAR OF REST AND RELAXATION – OTTESSA MOSHFEGH

Mein Lieblingsbuch 2019 war My Year of Rest and Relaxation (Dt. Mein Jahr der Ruhe und Entspannung ). Der Roman spiel im Jahr 2001 und folgt einer jungen New Yorkerin, während sie versucht das Leben nach der Uni zu navigieren. Eine großartige Satire über das Leben, FOMO, Beziehungen (sowohl romantische als auch die zu unseren Eltern und Freunden) und den großen Zukunftsdruck, den Millenials verspüren und wie man damit umgehen kann… Dazwischen noch etwas Kunst(-kritik) und fantastische Kritik am Gesundheitssystem und Pseudo Ärzten.

My favorite book 2019 was My Year of Rest and Relaxation. The novel takes place in 2001 and follows a young New Yorker as she tries to navigate life after college. A great satire about life, FOMO, relationships (both romantic and those with our parents and friends) and the big future pressures that Millenials feel and how to deal with them… In between some art(-criticism) and fantastic criticism of the health system and pseudo doctors.

FRANKISSSTEIN: A LOVE STORY – JEANETTE WINTERSON

Ein weiterer Lieblingsroman von 2019 war Frankissstein. Weg von klassischen Liebesgeschichten, klassischen Monstern à la Frankenstein. Der Roman hinterfragt alles: Liebe mit künstlicher Intelligenz und die neue Ethik der Körperpolitik. Ein großartiger, verwirrender Roman der auf Mary Shellys Frankenstein aufbaut und die Charaktere in die Moderne verlagert. Verwirrend und doch so anregend. Auch nachdem ich fertig war, konnte ich nicht aufhören über die angesprochenen Themen nachzudenken.

Another favourite novel of 2019 was Frankissstein. Away from classic love stories, classic monsters à la Frankenstein. The novel questions everything: love with artificial intelligence and the new ethics of body politics. A great, confusing novel that builds on Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein and shifts the characters into modernity. Confusing and yet so stimulating. Even after I finished, I couldn’t stop thinking about the issues raised.

SAINTS FOR ALL OCCASIONS – J. COURNTEY SULLIVAN

Wer den Roman oder auch den großartigen Film BROOKLYN mag, wird Saints for all Occasions (Dt. All die Jahre) lieben. Die Familiengeschichte Irischer Einwanderer nach Amerika und die Opfer, die dieses komplett neue Leben bedeutet. Großartig und herzergreifend.

If you like the novel or even the great movie BROOKLYN, you will love Saints for all Occasions. The story of Irish immigrants to America and the sacrifices that this completely new life means. A great and heartrending family story.

HAZARDS OF TIME TRAVEL – JOYCE CAROL OATES

Der neuste Roman von Joyce Carol Oates Hazards of Time Travel handelt genau davon: die Probleme bei Zeitreisen. Eigentlich soll es aber viel mehr sein, nämlich eine Dystopie die an Divergence erinnert. Und doch schafft es Oates meiner Meinung nach nicht, eine kohärente Geschichte zu erzählen. Die Hauptcharakterin ist eine langweilige und nach einiger Zeit nervige Erzählerin und auch sonst ist die Story etwas lückenhaft. Hier und da schimmert das durch, was der Roman hätte sein können, doch leider verliert er am Ende den wenigen Drive komplett und endet à la Inception mit einem Cliff-Hänger, doch keinem der guten Art.

The latest novel by Joyce Carol Oates Hazards of Time Travel is about exactly that: the problems of time travel. Actually, it is supposed to be much more, namely a dystopia that reminds of Divergence. And yet, in my opinion, Oates does not manage to tell a coherent story. The main character is a boring and after some time annoying narrator and also otherwise the story is a bit incomplete. Here and there what the novel could have been shimmers through, but sadly at the end it completely loses the little drive it had and ends à la Inception with a cliffhanger, but not in a good way.

SUPPER CLUB – LARA WILLIAMS

Der letzte Roman des Jahres war Supper Club von Lara Williams. Gleichzeitig auch der Neuste: erschienen ist er nämlich erst im Juli 2019. Ein großartiger Roman über die kaputte Beziehung von Frauen und Essen. Sowohl zu wenig als auch zu viel Essen wird thematisiert. Zusammen mit vielen anderen Thematiken. Der ganze Roman wirkte realer als Three Women und war ein krönender Abschluss zu einem guten Lesejahr. Ebenfalls einer meiner liebsten Romane 2019.

The last novel of the year was Supper Club by Lara Williams. It is also the latest novel: published in July 2019. It is a great novel about the broken relationship women have with food. It deals with both too little and too much food. Together with many other topics. The whole novel seemed more real than Three Women and was a crowning conclusion to a good reading year. Also one of my favourite novels 2019.

THE HEAVENS – SANDRA NEWMAN

Als letztes Buch muss ich noch The Heavens nennen. Das einzige Buch, das ich nicht zu ende gelesen habe und daher kann ich auch nicht viel darüber sagen, außer dass es mir nicht so gefallen hat.

The last book I have to mention is The Heavens. The only book I didn’t finish and therefore I can’t say much about it, except that I didn’t like it that much.
