Wer diesen Blog schon länger verfolgt weiß, dass ich Bücher liebe. Und auch, dass ich mir seit einigen Jahren die Challenge setzte, mindestens 2 Bücher im Monat zu lesen.
Ich liebe vor allem Romane die im hier und jetzt spielen, Sci-Fi oder Historien Romane sind nicht so meins. Aber auch Sachbücher und (Auto-)Biographien lese ich gerne. Und so möchte ich auch wieder meine Bücher von 2022 mit euch teilen. Pro Buch findet ihr eine kleine Einschätzung meinerseits inklusive Bewertung – hierbei handelt es sich um meine eigene, persönliche Meinung, die keinesfalls die einzig gültige ist. 🙂
If you’ve been following this blog for a while you know how much I love reading. And that I challenge myself every year to read at leats two books per month.
I love novels that are telling stories of the here and now – sci-fi or historical novels are not my thing – but I also like nun-fiction and (auto)biographies. And so I want to share my reading list of 2022 with you. I share with you a small assessment per book on my part including my ranking – this is my own personal opinion, which is by no means the only valid one.
MALALA YOUSAFZAI – ICH BIN MALALA
Mein erstes Buch in 2022 war kein anderes als die gefeierte Autobiographie der pakistanischen Menschen- und Frauenrechtsaktivistin Malala Yousafzai. Eine unglaubliche Geschichte die die grauenvollen Untaten der Taliban und deren Unmenschlichkeiten auf eine persönliche Art und Weise näher bringt. Malalas Geschichte und der Angriff auf sie durch die Taliban ist bestimmt vielen bekannt, doch diese nochmal in ihren eigenen Worten zu lesen ist nochmal etwas komplett anderes. Keine leichte Kost und doch so wichtig, die Augen nicht zu verschließen vor dem, was leider immer noch passiert.
My first book in 2022 was none other than the acclaimed autobiography of Pakistani human and women’s rights activist Malala Yousafzai. An incredible story that brings the horrific atrocities of the Taliban and their inhumanities closer in a personal way. Malala’s story and the attack on her by the Taliban is certainly known to many, but to read it again in her own words is something completely different. No light read and yet so important not to close your eyes to what is unfortunately still happening.
ANNE WEBER – ANNETTE, EIN HELDINNENEPOS
Mir war die französische Résistance-Kämpferin Anne Beaumanoir vor diesem Buch kein Begriff. Umso mehr habe ich sie während des gesamtem Buches kennengelernt, gefeiert und mir aber auch an den Kopf gegriffen, über ihre Waghalsigkeit und Mut. Eine inspirierende Geschichte, die für mich jedoch hinten raus etwas die Spannung verloren hat.
I didn’t know the French Resistance fighter Anne Beaumanoir before reading this book. All the more I got to know her during the whole read, celebrated her and also questioned her daring and courage. An inspiring story, but one that lost some of its suspense for me in the last third part of the book.
EMILY HENRY – PEOPLE WE MEET ON VACATION
Emily Henry lese ich super gerne – immer dann, wenn es mal etwas leichteres, nettes sein soll, bei dem das Happy End vorprogrammiert ist. Und genau das war auch wieder der Fall bei People we meet on Vacation. Allerdings hat mich dieser Roman nicht ganz so gecatcht wie andere Werke von ihr. Etwas zu viel „will they – won’t they“ für mich, dennoch eine tolle Unterhaltung, vor allem in grauen Februar Tagen.
I really enjoy reading Emily Henry – whenever I want to read something light and nice, where the happy ending is guaranteed. And that was exactly the case again with People we meet on Vacation. However, this novel didn’t quite hook me like the others of hers. A little too much „will they – won’t they“ for me, but still great entertainment, especially in gray February days.
CHARLOTTE McCONAGHY – ONCE THERE WERE WOLVES
Mit diesem Buch taucht man ein, in die Wildnis von Schottland, in ein Dorf, dass sich selbst vor Fremden und vor wilden Tieren zu beschützten versucht – genauso wie die Hauptfigur – und vor allem in die spannenden Verhaltensweisen von Wölfen. Der Roman ist super vielschichtig und einfühlsam geschrieben. Man fühlt mit allen mit und fühlt sich in diese schroffe Landschaft versetzt. Nur am Ende wurde es mir für das, wie die Geschichte aufgebaut wird, etwas zu wild, kitschig und irgendwo auch unrealistisch. Dennoch eine große Leseempfehlung.
With this book you dive into the wilderness of Scotland, into a village that tries to protect itself from strangers and from wild animals – just like the main character – and especially into the exciting behavior of wolves. The novel is super layered and sensitively written. You empathize with everyone and feel transported to this rugged landscape. Only at the end it became a bit too wild, cheesy and somewhere unrealistic for me for how the story is set up. Nevertheless, a great reading recommendation.
SUSANNA CLARK – PIRANESI
Eines meiner absoluten Favoriten des Jahres und definitiv auch in meiner Liste der allgemein besten Bücher die ich je gelesen habe. Was als etwas unverständlich beginnt, wird ganz schnell zu einer spannenden, verwobenen Geschichte mit Twists and Turns und vor allem einer grandiosen Prosa! Ich kann das Buch gar nicht beschreiben, ohne zu Spoilern, daher nur so viel von mir: Unbedingt lesen!
One of my absolute favorites of the year and definitely on my list of overall best books I’ve ever read. What starts as a bit incomprehensible, quickly becomes an exciting, interwoven story with twists and turns and above all a terrific prose! I can not describe the book without spoilers, so only so much from me: a must read!
MEG JAY – THE DEFINING DECADE
Psychologin Meg Jay bricht unsere 20er auf und beleuchtet die verschiedenen Aspekte, die diesen Lebensabschnitt für sie als „definierend“ für das restliche Leben machen, anhand verschiedenster Geschichten, die sie in ihrem Praxisalltag mitbekommen hat. Der Ansatz hat mir gut gefallen, jedoch merkt man an der ein oder anderen Stelle, dass das Buch sehr auf die amerikanische Sicht fokussiert ist und wir in Europa doch etwas anders funktionieren. Zudem ist es leider schon etwas älter – ich hätte gerne eine Fortsetzung, die die Auswirkungen von Social Media auf diese Defining Decade haben.
Psychologist Meg Jay breaks down our 20s and sheds light on the various aspects that make this period of life „defining“ for the rest of our lives, using a wide variety of stories that she has witnessed in her everyday practice. I liked the approach, but at one point or another I noticed that the book is very focused on the American point of view and that we in Europe function somewhat differently. In addition, it is unfortunately a bit older – I would have liked a sequel that analyses the impact of social media on this Defining Decade.
BERNADINE EVARISTO – GIRL, WOMEN, OTHER
Nicht zu unrecht wurde dieses Buch so sehr gelobt und gefeiert. Eine ganz spannende Lektüre die Einblicke in das Leben von BIPOCs gibt – über Generationen hinweg. Der Aufbau des Buches hat mich am Ende etwas gestört – für mich waren es zu viele Einzelgeschichten, ich hätte hier lieber weniger gehabt, die noch tiefer gehen. Aber das ist natürlich super individuell. Ansonsten ebenfalls eine absolute Leseempfehlung.
I completely understand why this book has been so highly praised and celebrated. A very exciting read that gives insights into the lives of BIPOCs – across generations. The structure of the book was the only thing I didn’t love – for me there were too many individual stories, I would have preferred fewer, which go deeper. But that is of course super individual. Otherwise, also an absolute reading recommendation.
JESSICA BARRY – DON’T TURN AROUND
Wer Thriller liebt, wird dieses Buch lieben. Bereits das erste Kapitel startet so nervenaufreibend und ist in einer Art und Weise geschrieben, die mich als Leserin direkt in die Geschichte hineingezogen hat. Und hier wurde es mir dann zu viel – ich bin einfach kein Fan von Thrillern und die Vorstellung, von einem Fremden Mann verfolgt zu werden, ist wirklich eines meiner größten Albträume. Daher war das Buch leider nichts für mich.
If you love thrillers, you will love this book. The very first chapter starts off so nerve-wracking and is written in a way that pulled me as a reader right into the story. And here it became too much for me – I’m just not a fan of thrillers and the idea of being chased by a stranger is really one of my biggest nightmares. Therefore, the book was unfortunately not for me.
LAUREN WEISBERGER – EVERYONE WORTH KNOWING
Der Teufel trägt Prada habe ich damals verschlungen und als ich in einem Bücherschrank dieses Werk von Lauren Weisberger gesehen habe, musste ich es mitnehmen. Denn als jemand der selbst PR macht klingt die Geschichte sehr amüsant. Doch leider war es für mich alles etwas zu übertrieben, voller Stereotypen (und nicht die amüsanten), wirkte teils gewollt und auch sehr vorhersehbar. Anfang 20 hätte es mir denke ich besser gefallen.
I devoured The Devil Wears Prada back in the day, and when I stumbled upon this work by Lauren Weisberger, I had to pick it up. Because as someone who does PR herself, the story sounds very amusing. But unfortunately for me it was all a bit too over the top, full of stereotypes (and not the amusing ones), seemed partly contrived and also very predictable. In my early 20s, I think I would have liked it better.
KILEY REID – SUCH A FUN AGE
Auch dieses Buch hat sehr viel Aufmerksamkeit und Lob erhalten. Meine Erwartungen waren daher sehr hoch. Leider wurden sie nicht komplett erfüllt. Obwohl Kiley Reid tolle Einblicke in die verschiedenen Charaktere gibt und die Komplexität die wir Frauen, und vor allem POC Frauen, haben, beleuchtet, hat mir am Ende das gewisse Etwas gefehlt.
This book has also received a lot of attention and praise. My expectations were therefore very high. Unfortunately, they were not met completely. Although Kiley Reid gives great insights into the different characters and illuminates the complexities that we women, and especially POC women, have, I was missing that certain something in the end.
DOUGLAS STUART – YOUNG MUNGO
Douglas Stuarts Familientragödie – das ist es zumindest für mich – nimmt einen direkt mit in die Arbeiterschicht in Schottland und die Skrupellosigkeit die vor allem gegenüber LGBTQIA+ Mitgliedern früher herrschte, aber zum Teil immer noch anhält – nicht nur in Schottland! Eine wirklich tolle Erzählung mit einem einfühlsamen Hauptcharakter, mit dem man von Anfang an mitfühlt und gleichzeitig am liebsten direkt ins Buch springen will um ihm zu helfen. Zeitweise hatte es für mich ein paar Längen, daher keine volle Punktzahl.
Douglas Stuart’s family tragedy – at least that’s what it is for me – takes you right into the working class in Scotland and the ruthlessness that used to prevail, especially towards LGBTQIA+ members, but still continues to some extent – not only in Scotland! A really great narrative with an empathetic main character who you feel for from the start and at the same time want to jump straight into the book to help him. At times it had a few lengths for me, therefore not full score.
THILO MISCHKE – ALLES MUSS RAUS
Ich verfolge den Journalisten Thilo Mischke seit einigen Jahren und liebe seine Podcasts und TV Investitionen. Alles muss raus vereint seine spannendsten Stories in einem Buch. Nicht immer leichte Kost, aber absolut empfehlenswert.
I have been following journalist Thilo Mischke for several years and love his podcasts and TV investments. Alles muss raus combines his most exciting stories in one book. Not always light fare, but absolutely recommendable.
JULI ZEH – UNTER LEUTEN
Für viele ist meine Bewertung für dieses Buch unverständlich, denn es ist super beliebt. Das Buch ist so gut geschrieben, dass es mich regelrecht wahnsinnig gemacht hat – die Intrigen, der Egoismus und die absolute Ich-Fokussierung der Charaktere werden so gut porträtiert, dass ich mich nur aufregen konnte während dem Lesen. Ja, so sind leider viele Deutsche und gerade in den kleine Orten unseres Landes. Doch für mich war das alles etwas zu viel des Guten.
For many, my rating for this book is incomprehensible because it is super popular. The book is so well written that it really drove me crazy – the intrigues, the selfishness and the absolute ego-focus of the characters are portrayed so well that I could only get upset while reading. Yes, unfortunately many Germans are like that and especially in the small towns of our country. But for me it was all a bit too much.
LINA MALLON – 30 WOMEN
Ich folge Lina Mallon seit vielen Jahren auf Social Media und habe mich sehr über ihren ersten Non-Fiction Roman gefreut. Ich liebe ihren Schreibstil und die Geschichten waren alle wunderbar. Mir hat am Ende etwas übergreifendes gefehlt, dass dem Buch aus meiner Sicht sehr gut getan hätte, aber dennoch eine tolle Ode an Frauen.
I have been following Lina Mallon on social media for many years and was very excited to read her first non-fiction novel. I love her writing style and the stories were all wonderful. I was missing something overarching at the end that I think would have bade the book even better, but still a great ode to women.
WANDA BADWAL – CHAKRA YOGA
Ok ich gebe zu, das ist nicht wirklich ein Buch, dass ich in einem Stück gelesen habe, denn dafür ist es auch nicht gedacht. Sondern eher ein Guide, zu dem ich seitdem immer wieder zurückgreife. Ich tauche seit einiger Zeit immer tiefer in den Yoga Kosmos ein und finde das Chakren-System super spannend. Wenn das etwas ist, was dich interessiert, kann ich Wandas Buch auf jeden Fall empfehlen!
Ok I admit, this is not really a book that I read in one piece, because that’s not what it’s meant for. It’s more of a guide that I’ve been going back to ever since. I’ve been diving deeper and deeper into the yoga cosmos for some time now and find the chakra system super exciting. If this is something you’re interested in, I can definitely recommend Wanda’s book!
MICHELLE ZAUNER – CRYING IN H MART
Eine tiefgründige Autobiografie die für mich ein absolutes Masterpiece ist. Michelle Zauner beschreibt den Verlust ihrer Mutter so feinfühlig und vor allem durch Essen. Große Leseempfehlung!
A profound autobiography that is an absolute masterpiece for me. Michelle Zauner describes the loss of her mother so sensitively and most importantly through food. Great reading recommendation!
HERNAN DIAZ – TRUST
Ein Buch im Buch – per se ein Konzept, das ich ganz cool finde – auch im Film. Bei Hernan Diaz‘ Trust handelt es sich jedoch um mehrere Bücher im Buch – um Genau zu sein 3. Während die ersten beiden mich in ihren Bann gezogen haben und ein tolles „he said she said“ Prinzip verfolgen, ist das 3. Buch aus meiner Sicht nicht wirklich notwendig. Wer Lust auf eine Geschichte zwischen Great Gatsby und Wolf of Wallstreet hat, sollte es aber auf jeden Fall lesen.
A book within a book – per se a concept I find quite cool – also in film. However, Hernan Diaz’s Trust is several books within a book – 3 to be exact. While the first two captivated me and follow a great „he said she said“ principle, the 3rd book is not really necessary in my eyes. But if you’re in the mood for a story between Great Gatsby and Wolf of Wallstreet, you should definitely read it.
SELBY WYNN SCHWARTZ – AFTER SAPPO
Das ist ein Buch, dass sich nur schwer beschreiben lässt. Es hat mich jedoch zurück in mein Literaturstudium versetzt. So viel magische Texte, Geschichten die miteinander verknüpft sind und vor allem Blicke auf Frauen der Vergangenheit, die bereits in Vergessenheit geraten sind.
This is a book that is hard to describe. However, it took me back to my literature studies. So much magical writing, stories that are interconnected, and most importantly, glimpses into the (fictional) lives women of the past who have already been forgotten.
COCO MELLORS – CLEOPATRA AND FRANKENSTEIN
Was für ein toller Roman! Bereits auf der ersten Seite wird man in seinen Bann gezogen. Die Charaktere sind so toll beschrieben, man fühlt mit ihnen mit und leidet auch entsprechend mit ihnen. Einziges Manko für mich: manche Nebencharaktere gelangen etwas in Vergessenheit im Laufe des Buches, das ist schade.
What a great novel! Already on the first page you are drawn into its spell. The characters are so well described, you feel with them and also suffer with them accordingly. The only drawback for me: some secondary characters are somewhat forgotten in the course of the book, which is a pity.
STEPHANIE LAND – MAID
Stephanie Land schafft mit ihrer Autobiographie einen Blick in eine Arbeiterschicht, die so selten gewährt wird. Und in ein Leben, dass alles andere als leicht ist. Feinfühlig beschreibt sie ihre Reise und die Hürden. Ich habe von Anfang an mitgekämpft und so mitgefühlt.
With her autobiography, Stephanie Land gives a glimpse into a working life that is so rarely granted. And into a life that is anything but easy. She sensitively describes her journey and the hurdles. I struggled along from the beginning and felt so empathetic.
AUDREY MAGEE – THE COLONY
Noch so ein schwer beschreibbares Buch, dass mich als ehemalige Sprach- und Kunststudentin aber total gecached hat. Auf einer kleinen irischen Insel geht es um den Erhalt von Sprachen, das Porträtieren der Inselbewohner:innen und vor allem den Lauf der Zeit. Tolle Prosa die einen auf diese windige Insel verschlägt und spannende, vielschichtige Charaktere.
Another book that is hard to describe but one that totally cached me as a former language and arts student. Set on a small Irish island, it’s about language preservation, portraying the island’s inhabitants, and most importantly, the passage of time. Great prose that takes you to this windy island and exciting, multi-layered characters.
LUCY FOLEY – THE PARIS APARTMENT
Die Grundidee und Story von Lucy Foley’s The Paris Apartment hat mir gut gefallen, jedoch verliert sich das Buch irgendwie im Laufe der Geschichte etwas. Am Ende jagt eine verrückte und unglaubwürdig Enthüllung die nächste und lässt es alles etwas übertrieben wirken.
I liked the basic idea and storyline of Lucy Foley’s The Paris Apartment, but the book somehow loses its way a bit as the story progresses. In the end, one crazy and implausible revelation follows the next and makes it all seem a bit over the top.
CHARLES DICKENS – CHRISTMAS STORIES
In der Vorweihnachtszeit hatte ich mal wieder richtig Lust auf die Geschichten von Charles Dickens und vor allem A Christmas Carol. Egal wie oft ich sie lese, ich liebe die Geschichte und vor allem den Symbolismus der dahinter steckt.
In the run-up to Christmas, I was really in the mood for the stories of Charles Dickens and especially A Christmas Carol. No matter how often I read them, I love the story and especially the symbolism behind it.
ELIZABETH STROUT – OH WILLIAM!
Das Jahr endete für mich mit diesem grandiosem Roman über eine Frau und ihren Ex-Mann, mit dem sie immer noch verbunden ist – freundschaftlich. Eine tolle Geschichte die zeigt, wie vielschichtig unsere menschlichen Beziehungen sind, dass es immer zwei Seiten zu jeder Erzählung gibt und grandios einfühlsam erzählt wird. Ein letztes Mal: große Leseempfehlung!
The year ended for me with this terrific novel about a woman and her ex-husband, with whom she is still connected – amicably. A great story that shows how multi-layered our human relationships are, that there are always two sides to every narrative and is told with terrific empathy. One last time: great reading recommendation!
