2021 war mein drittes Jahr mit einer Jahres-Lese-Challenge: mindestens 2 Bücher pro Monat lesen – das war mein Vorsatz. Am Ende wurden es ganze 27. Wie auch in den letzten Jahren habe ich 2021 eine Mischung aus Romanen, Klassikern, Non-Fiction Werken und auch das ein oder andere kontroverse feministische Buch gelesen. Ich teile mit euch pro Buch eine kleine Einschätzung meinerseits – hierbei handelt es sich um meine eigene, persönliche Meinung, die keinesfalls die einzig gültige ist.
2021 marks my third year of having a little yearly reading challenge and trying to read at least 2 books a month. In the end I read 27. As always this year was a mix of novels, classics, non-fiction pieces and controversial female books. I share with you a small assessment per book on my part – this is my own personal opinion, which is by no means the only valid one.
ANNA GAVALDA – EIN GESCHENKTER TAG (L’ échappée belle)
Begonnen habe ich mien literarisches Jahr mit der französischen Schriftstellerin Anna Gavalda und ihrem Roman Ein geschenkter Tag. Eine leichte Lektüre, die mich durch den dunklen Januar gebracht hat. Nicht mein Favorit von ihr, aber dennoch berührend und wunderschön geschrieben.
I started my literary year with the French writer Anna Gavalda and her novel A Gift Day. A light read that got me through the dark month of January. Not my favorite of hers, but still touching and beautifully written.
LIV STRÖMQUIST – I’M EVERY WOMAN
Mein zweites Buch im Januar war dieses feministische Werk, das die Geschichten berühmter Frauen der Geschichte und ihre Rolle als Frau darin nacherzählt. Ein großartiges Buch, das sowohl zum Nachdenken anregt als auch lustig ist.
My second book of January was this feminist pieces that re-tells the stories of famous women of history and their role as a woman in them. A great book that is both thought provoking and funny.
JULES VERNE – IN 80 DAYS AROUND THE WORLD & VOYAGE AU CENTRE DE LA TERRE
Mein restlicher Januar war mit Jules Vernes Werken gefüllt. Zwei seiner Klassiker die ich tatsächlich nie selbst gelesen habe und dies nachholen wollte. In 80 Tagen um die Welt hat mich sehr fasziniert. Die Reise zum Mittelpunkt der Erde war eher etwas langwierig meiner Meinung nach. Natürlich immer noch tolle Meisterwerke.
The rest of my January was filled with Jules Verne’s works. Two of his classics I actually never read myself and wanted to catch up on. In 80 days around the world fascinated me a lot. Journey to the Center of the Earth was rather tedious in my opinion. Still great masterpieces, of course.
YOKO OGAWA – THE MEMORY POLICE
Den Monat beendet habe ich mit Yoko Ogawas The Memory Police – eine unglaublich tolle Dystopie. Spannende Wendungen treffen auf einen tollen Schreibstil. Das Buch hat mich wirklich in seinen Bann gezogen und meine Erwartungen wurden immer größer. Leider war das Ende für mich etwas antiklimaktisch und daher gebe ich dem Buch gesamt nur 4 von 5 Punkten.
Last but not least I ended the month with Yoko Ogawas great dystopia The memory police. Exciting twists and turns meet a great writing style. The book really captivated me and my expectations grew. Unfortunately, the ending was a bit anticlimactic for me and therefore I give the book only 4 out of 5 points.
KAREN DUVE – FRÄULEIN NETTES KURZER SOMMER
Dieses Buch hätte ich mir definitiv nicht selbst ausgesucht und bin ziemlich glücklich darüber, dass mir meine Mutter die Empfehlung gegeben hat, den Roman über drei Sommer im Leben Annette von Droste-Hülshoffs, Schriftstellerin und Komponistin der Romantik, zu lesen. Eine Person, über die ich ebenfalls davor wenig Ahnung hatte. Eine nette Unterhaltung, leider mit einigen Längen.
This is definitely not a book I would have chosen for myself, and I am quite happy that my mother recommended that I read the novel about three summers in the life of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, writer and composer of the Romantic period. A person I had little idea about before that as well. A nice entertainment, unfortunately with some lengths.
STEFAN ZWEIG – SCHACHNOVELLE
Ein weiterer Roman der mir empfohlen wurde – dieses Mal von einer sehr guten Freundin und ein kompletter Treffer. Ich habe das Buch verschlungen und mich komplett in der Geschichte und den Charakteren verloren.
Another novel recommended to me – this time by a very good friend and a complete hit. I devoured the book and completely lost myself in the story and the characters.
IVY POCHODA – THESE WOMEN
In These Women trifft wahres Verbrechen auf Frauenpower und die Realität und den Kampf einer Frau in der heutigen Welt. Eine wirklich fesselnde Geschichte, die sich auf verschiedene Frauen in einer bestimmten Zeit konzentriert und wie sie alle miteinander verbunden sind.
True crime meets female power and the reality and struggle of being a woman in today’s world in These Women. A truly captivating story that focusses on different women around a certain period in time and how they are all connected.
DAVID MARKSON – WITTGENSTEIN’S MISTRESS
Ein literarisches „Must have“ doch für mich sehr langatmig und – es mag auch am weitergehenden Lockdown gelegen haben – etwas schwierig…

ZADIE SMITH – INTIMATIONS
Zadie Smiths letzte Publikation und auch bei diesem Buch habe ich es leider zur falschen Zeit gelesen. Corona war immer noch das größte Thema im März und ein Buch zu lesen, dass sich bereits damit auseinandersetzte, war einfach etwas unpassend für mich zu dem Zeitpunkt.
Zadie Smith’s latest publication, and again with this book, I unfortunately read it at the wrong time. Corona was still the biggest topic in March and reading a book that already dealt with it was just a bit inappropriate for me at the time.
VLADIMIR NABOKOV – LOLITA
Auch der April stand für mich unter dem Zeichen der Klassiker. Ein Buch das ich schon ewig in meinem Schrank hatte, aber noch nicht gelesen, war Lolita. Verstörend ist die Geschichte und umso faszinierender die Charaktere die Vladimir Nabokov vielschichtig skizziert hat und die psychischen und moralischen Themen und Fragen die es aufwirft. Literarisch volle Punkte, aber die Story fand ich dann doch etwas sehr anstrengend und vulgär.
April stood also under the sign of the classics. A book that I had on my shelves for ages, but not yet read, was Lolita. The story is disturbing and the characters Vladimir Nabokov has sketched in many layers and the psychological and moral issues and questions it raises are all the more fascinating. Full points literarily, but I found the story a bit trying and vulgar.
CHARLES DICKENS – OUR MUTUAL FRIEND
An diesem Buch habe ich mir auch etwas die Zähne ausgebissen. Trotz dem „Klassiker“ Status und immer noch relevanten Themen die angesprochen werden, war mir die Geschwindigkeit der Erzählung gerade am Anfang zu langsam und ich bin nicht wirklich rein gekommen.
I also cut my teeth a bit on this book. Despite the „classic“ status and still relevant topics that are addressed, the pace of the narrative was too slow for me, especially in the beginning, and I didn’t really get into it.
JOANNE TOMPKINS – WHAT COMES AFTER
Das Buch war eines meiner Highlights des Jahres. Eine tolle Geschichte mit spannenden Charakteren und einer mystischen Kulisse. Leider hat am Ende dann doch das gewisse Etwas gefehlt…
This book was one of my highlights of the year. A great story with exciting characters and a mystical setting. Unfortunately, the certain something was missing at the end…
TAYLOR JENKINS REED – DAISY JONES AND THE SIX
Eine lustige und leichte Lektüre mit einer tollen Geschichte und sehr coolen Charakteren. Ich schätze, es ist sogar noch besser für diejenigen, die in den 70er und 80er Jahren schon gelebt haben.
A fun and light read with a great story and very cool characters. I guess it is even better for those that were actually already alive in the 70’s and 80’s.
MEG WOLITZER – BELZHAR
Ende Mai hatte ich richtig Lust, eines meiner liebsten YA Bücher wieder zu lesen. Meg Wolitzers Belzhar ist immer noch so bezaubernd, wie ich es in Erinnerung hatte aber natürlich aus der Sicht einer Erwachsenen etwas unrealistischer und einige der Situationen weniger verständlich als mit 16.
At the end of May, I really felt like re-reading one of my favorite YA books. Meg Wolitzer’s Belzhar is still as enchanting as I remembered but, of course, a bit more unrealistic from an adult point of view and some of the situations less understandable than when I was 16.
MATT HAIG – THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY
Dieses Buch war zu dem Zeitpunkt gefühlt überall und jeder sprach darüber. Da wollte ich natürlich mitreden und muss leider sagen: ich verstehe den Hype darum nicht wirklich. Die Geschichte ist nett und schön geschrieben, doch absolut vorhersehbar und auch nichts wirklich neues. Bei dem Hype hatte ich mehr erwartet.
This book was everywhere at the time and everyone was talking about it. So of course I wanted to join in the conversation and unfortunately I have to say: I don’t really understand the hype about it. The story is nice and beautifully written, but absolutely predictable and also nothing really new. With the hype I had expected more.
KIKUKO TSUMURA – THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS AN EASY JOB
Leider ein weiteres Buch, das überall angepriesen wurde und für mich nicht hielt, was es versprach. Diese Geschichte, die ähnlich zu My year of rest and relaxation sein soll (was ich geliebt habe), über eine junge Frau, die versucht, einen Job zu finden, bei dem sie nicht denken oder wirklich etwas tun muss, fühlte sich super deprimierend an, und im Gegensatz zu Ersterem nicht auf eine lustige, satirische Art über uns Millennials, sondern eher auf eine düstere und einfach langweilige Art. Die Moral von der Geschicht: würde ich nicht empfehlen.
Sadly another book that was super hyped everywhere and for me did not live up to the promises. Said to be similar to My year of rest and relaxation which I absolutely loved, this story of a young woman trying to find a job where she does not have to think or really do anything felt super depressing and unlike the former mentioned not in a fun satirical way of us millennials but rather in a bleak and just boring way. The moral of the story: would not recommend.
M.L.RIO – IF WE WERE VILLAINS
Nach einigen, etwas ernüchternden Büchern, habe ich dann If we were Villains gelesen. Definitiv eines meiner Lieblingsbücher des Jahres und aller Zeiten. Es wirkt inspiriert von Donna Tarts Secret History aber für mich viel weniger langwierig und vorhersehbar, sondern ein spannender Roman rund um eine Gruppe College-Freunde und einen Tod. Dazu noch ganz viel Shakespeare und eine tolle Szenerie und ich war im Buch-Himmel.
After a few, somewhat sobering books, I then read If we were Villains. Definitely one of my favourite books of the year and I would also say one of my top books of all time. It seems inspired by Donna Tartt’s Secret History but much less drawn out and predictable for me, instead a suspenseful novel about a group of college friends and a death. Add to that a whole lot of Shakespeare and great scenery and I was in book heaven.
MAGGIE O’FARRELL – HAMNET
Auch ein viel-besprochenes Buch doch endlich mal eines, was die Versprechen der positiven Kritiken auch wirklich halten konnte. Wieder einmal Shakespeare und doch so anders als alle anderen Shakespeare Bücher und vor allem mit großartigem Fokus auf den Frauen.
Also a much-discussed book, but finally one that could really keep the promise of the positive reviews. Once again Shakespeare and yet so different from all other Shakespeare books and especially with great focus on the women.
IAN URBINA – THE OUTLAW OCEAN
Nach den Shakespeare Romanen kam im September dann ein krasser Bruch mit The Outlaw Ocean. Ein investigativ Roman über die großen, weiten und vor allem unregierte Weltmeere und den Schand- aber auch Heldentaten die dort betrieben werden. Inspirierend aber vor allem schockierend und augenöffnend. Keine leichte Lektüre (ich habe immer nur ein Kapitel lesen können und dann eine Pause von dem Grauen und Missständen gegen die nichts getan wird oder werden kann gebraucht), aber super wichtig, sich auch mit solchen Themen auseinanderzusetzen.
After the Shakespeare novels came a sharp break in September with The Outlaw Ocean. An investigative novel about the big, wide and above all unruled oceans and the shameful but also heroic deeds that are carried out there. Inspiring but above all shocking and eye-opening. Not an easy read (I could only read one chapter at a time and then needed a break from the horror and abuses against which nothing is done or can be done), but super important to deal with such issues.
SALLY ROONEY – BEAUTIFUL WORLD WHERE ARE YOU
Nachdem ich Sally Rooneys erste zwei Bücher Normal People und Conversations with Friends verschlungen habe und Normal People für mich eines der besten Neuerscheinungen der letzten Jahre ist, habe ich natürlich direkt ihren neusten Roman gekauft. Auch Beautiful World where are you trifft den Zeitgeist. Doch irgendwie hat der Geschichte eine gewisse Leichtigkeit gefehlt und gleichzeitig waren sehr viele Ähnlichkeiten zu den anderen beiden Romanen zu finden und somit auch etwas unvorhersehbar.
After devouring Sally Rooney’s first two books, Normal People and Conversations with Friends, and finding Normal People to be one of the best new releases in recent years, I naturally went straight for her latest novel. Beautiful World where are you also hits the zeitgeist. But somehow the story lacked a certain lightness and at the same time there were a lot of similarities to the other two novels and therefore a bit unpredictable.
KEVIN KWAN – SEX AND VANITY
Ich habe Crazy rich asians geliebt und als ich dieses Buch von Kevin Kwan in einem Antiquariat auf einer griechischen Insel fand, habe ich es natürlich gekauft. Doch leider ist diese Geschichte bei weitem nicht so lustig und reizvoll wie Crazy rich asians. Es ist super übertrieben, unrealistisch und spielt mit Stereotypen auf eine nicht so lustige Weise.
I loved Crazy rich asians and so when I found this book by Kevin Kwan in a thrift book store on a Greek Island naturally bought it. However sadly this story is nowhere near as fun and delightful as Crazy rich asians. It is super over the top, unrealistic and plays with stereotypes in a not-so-fun way.
ALEXIS HENDERSON – THE YEAR OF THE WITCHING
Wie jedes Jahr lese ich zu Halloween ein extra gruseliges Buch. Dieses Mal ist es The Year of the Witching geworden. Gerade der Anfang hat mir super gut gefallen und genau nach meinem Geschmack. Leider wurde die Story zum Ende hin dann doch sehr wild.
Like every year, I read an extra spooky book for Halloween. This time it has become The Year of the Witching. Especially the beginning I liked super well and exactly to my taste. Unfortunately, the story became very wild towards the end.
KRISTIN HANNAH – THE GREAT ALONE
Dieser Roman war genau nach meinem Geschmack – eine crazy Geschichte von Aussteigern die versuchen in der Wildnis Alaskas Fuß zu Fassen und vor allem zu Überleben. Dazu ein Mix aus toxischer Familiendynamik und wahrer Freundschaft. Leider war auch hier die Geschichte gegen Ende etwas sehr übertrieben.
This novel was right up my alley – a crazy story of dropouts trying to get a foothold in the Alaskan wilderness and, most importantly, survive. Plus a mix of toxic family dynamics and true friendship. Unfortunately, the story was also a bit overdone towards the end.
DONNA TART – THE SECRET HISTORY
Diesen Roman hätte ich vermutlich VOR If we were Villains lesen müssen, denn so wirkte es einfach zu ähnlich und für meinen Geschmack zu vorhersehbar und vor allem nach der Hälfte sehr zäh.
I probably should have read this novel BEFORE reading If we were Villains, because it just seemed too similar and predictable for my taste, and especially tough after halfway through.
MEG MASON – SORROW AND BLISS
Ich hätte das Buch mehrmals fast aufgegeben, aber da meine Mutter, die mir das Buch auch empfohlen hat, mir sagte, ich solle durchhalten, da es am Ende besser wird, habe ich es getan. Nun, es wurde besser, aber die Zeit dazwischen war einfach zu anstrengend für mich. Die Hauptfigur hat mich aus irgendeinem Grund wirklich genervt.
I almost gave up on this book multiple times but as my mother, who recommended this to me as well, told me to hang in there as it was getting better in the end, I did. Well it did get better however the in between was just too exhausting for me. The main character really annoyed me for some reason.
MEG WOLITZER – THE FEMALE PERSUASION
Nachdem ich als Jugendliche so ein Fan von Meg Wolitzers Belzhar war, wollte ich unbedingt The Female Persuasion lesen. Die Geschichte wird als feministisches Meisterwerk angepriesen, doch verliert sich leider in vielen anderen Dingen und auch hier ist die Hauptfigur leider eher anstrengend, als inspirierend.
After being such a fan of Meg Wolitzer’s Belzhar as a teenager, I was eager to read The Female Persuasion. The story is supposed to be a feminist masterpiece, but unfortunately gets lost in a lot of other things, and again, the main character is unfortunately more exhausting than inspiring.
