Wie auch letztes Jahr, habe ich mir dieses Jahr wieder den Vorsatz gesetzt, mehr zu lesen. Da ich 2019 tatsächlich 23 Bücher gelesen habe (also fast 2 pro Monat) und mein Ziel eigentlich nur 12 waren, dachte ich mir, kann ich 2020 wirklich versuchen 2 Bücher im Monat zu lesen. Am Ende wurden es 31!
Die Bücher sind ein großer Mix aus Roman, Sachbücher, Biografien, Englische, Deutsche und internationale Literatur. Großer Fokus lag bei mir in diesem Jahr auch auf Büchern rund um #BlackLivesMatter.
Just like last year, this year I set myself the resolution to read more. Since I actually read 23 books in 2019 (so almost 2 per month) and my goal was actually only 12, I figured I can really try to read 2 books a month in 2020. In the end I read 31!
The books are a great mix of novels, non-fiction, biographies, English, German and international literature. A big focus for me this year was also books about #BlackLivesMatter.
NORMAL PEOPLE – SALLY ROONEY
Das Jahr habe ich mit einem meiner absoluten Lieblingsbücher gestartet. Sally Rooney’s Roman um Marianne und Connell, ihre Entwicklung von Highschool Liebling und schüchternem Girl aus reichem Haus hin zu College Queen und komischen Typen und die verworrene Verbindung und on-off Beziehung der beiden war nicht nur überaus erfrischend, sondern trotz der Dramen romantisch und realistisch. Sally Rooney ist definitiv eine meiner neuen Lieblingsautorinnen geworden!
I started the year with one of my all-time favorite books. Sally Rooney’s novel about Marianne and Connell, their evolution from high school sweetheart and shy girl from a rich home to college queen and funny guy and their tangled connection and on-off relationship was not only beyond refreshing, but romantic and realistic despite the drama. Sally Rooney has definitely become one of my new favorite authors!
BRAVE NEW WORLD – ALDOUS HUXLEY
Dieses Buch habe ich in Vorbereitung auf das gleichnamige Theaterstück gelesen, das ich im Januar 2020 im Münchner Volkstheater gesehen habe – das letzte Mal Theater 😦 Die Story ist bekannt und die dystopische Welt im Jahr 2020 nicht mehr ganz so weit weg, wie im Erscheinungsjahr 1932. Dennoch ein Must-Read der Literaturgeschichte.
I read this book in preparation for the play of the same name, which I saw at the Munich Volkstheater in January 2020 – the last time I was in the theater 😦 The story is familiar and the dystopian world in 2020 is not quite as far away as it was in 1932, the year of publication. Still, a must-read in literary history.
BECOMING – MICHELLE OBAMA
Neben mehr Deutschen Büchern, wollte ich auch weiterhin Biografien in meinen Buch-Mix inkludieren. Passend dazu die Auto-Biografie von Michelle Obama und ihrer spannenden Lebensgeschichte von kleinem Mädchen aus armen Verhältnissen, hin zu Anwältin, Aktivistin und letztendlich First Lady von Amerika. Der Anfang hat sich etwas gezogen, aber gerade die Einblicke in den Alltag im Weißen Haus waren sehr spannend.
In addition to more German books, I wanted to continue to include biographies in my book mix. Fittingly, the auto-biography of Michelle Obama and her exciting life story from little girl from a poor background to lawyer, activist and finally First Lady of America. The beginning dragged a bit, but especially the insights into everyday life in the White House were very exciting.
CALL ME BY YOUR NAME – ANDRÉ ACIMAN
Der Februar ging dann direkt mit meinem zweiten Favoriten des Jahres weiter. Call me by your name hat mich definitiv überrascht. Die Geschichte ist unendlich packend und durch die Erzählperspektive des Protagonisten fühlt man sich unendlich in die Welt hineingezogen. Dazu die atemberaubend beschriebene Kulisse eines heißen, Italienischen Sommers voll mit Sonne, Wein, späten Abenden und kühlem Steinboden unter den nackten Füßen. Dieses Buch ist ein Gedicht! Wer den ebenfalls tollen Film noch nicht gesehen hat, dem empfehle ich definitiv vorab das Buch zu lesen.
February then continued directly with my second favorite of the year. Call me by your name definitely surprised me. The story is endlessly gripping and through the narrative perspective of the protagonist you feel endlessly drawn into the world. Add to that the breathtakingly described backdrop of a hot, Italian summer filled with sun, wine, late evenings and cool stone floors under your bare feet. This book is a poem! If you haven’t seen the amazing movie yet, I definitely recommend reading the book in advance.
MY SISTER THE SERIAL KILLER – OYINKAN BRAITHWAITE
In diesem weiteren Favorit des Jahres für mich, dreht sich alles um eine junge Frau, dessen Schwester ihre Freunde umbringt. Ob unglücklicher Unfall oder Versehen – die Protagonistin hilft ihrer jüngeren Schwester steht dabei, die Schlamassel aufzuräumen, Spuren zu verstecken und tote Körper zu entsorgen. Zwischen Eifersucht, Neid und der Liebesbande in der Familie hat das Buch alles zu bieten, was eine lustige, satirische Komödie so braucht.
In this other favorite of the year for me, it’s all about a young woman whose sister kills her friends. Whether unfortunate accident or accidental, the protagonist helps her younger sister stands to clean up the mess, hide clues and dispose of dead bodies. Between jealousy, envy and the bonds of love in the family, the book has everything a funny, satirical comedy needs.
THE RADIUM GIRLS – KATE MOORE
Eine weitere Biografie, die sich aber mehr wie ein Roman liest: die unglaubliche Geschichte der Radium Girls. Jungen Frauen, die zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts in den Uhr-Fabriken in Amerika arbeiten und das Zifferblatt mit Radium-Farbe bemalen, um es auch im Dunkeln zum Leuchten zu bringen. Was als DER Traumjob gilt, entpuppt sich jedoch sehr bald als Albtraum, denn die gefährlichen und unheilbaren Schäden des Radiums, kennen damals noch die wenigsten. Das Buch beschreibt sehr bildhaft das Leiden der jungen Frauen und den Kampf einiger, für Gerechtigkeit und Schmerzensgeld von ehemaligen Arbeitgebern. Nichts für schwache Nerven aber ein Stück Geschichte, dass man kennen sollte. (PS: daraus wird wohl derzeit eine Netflix Serie gemacht)
Another biography, but one that reads more like a novel: the incredible story of the Radium Girls. Young women who work in watch factories in America at the beginning of the 20th century, painting the dials with radium paint to make it glow even in the dark. What is considered THE dream job, however, very soon turns out to be a nightmare, because of the dangerous and incurable damages of radium – however at that time only few new about it and most tried to hide this fact. The book describes very vividly the suffering of the young women and their fight for justice and compensation from former employers. Nothing for the faint of heart but a piece of history that you should know. (PS: it is currently made into a Netflix series)
CONVERSATIONS WITH FRIENDS – SALLY ROONEY
Nachdem ich Normal People innerhalb von 2 Tagen gelesen hatte, habe ich mir direkt das zweite und neuere Buch von Sally Rooney gekauft. Auch Conversations with Friends besticht durch realistische Stories und echte Momente. Doch dieses Buch hat mir leider etwas weniger gut gefallen als Normal People. Vielleicht habe ich auch zu hohe Erwartungen gehabt. Dennoch ein toller Roman, den ich definitiv empfehle.
After reading Normal People within 2 days, I immediately bought the second and newer book by Sally Rooney. Conversations with Friends also captivates with realistic stories and real moments. But I didn’t like this book as much as Normal People. Maybe I had too high expectations. Still, a great novel that I definitely recommend.
THE GREENLANDERS – JANE SMILEY
Ein weiteres, außergewöhnliches Buch – zumindest für meinen Buchgeschmack. Historienromane sind eigentlich nicht so mein Fall, doch diese Familiengeschichte der frühen Siedler Grönlands und die Erzählt im Stil von Nordischen Sagen hat es mir irgendwie angetan. Das Buch ist sehr lang und zieht sich über mehrere Jahrzehnte und Generationen. Doch wenn man einmal mit dem ersten Drittel durch ist, steckt man so tief in der Welt, dem Leid und dem Kampf ums Überleben in diesem Abgeschotteten Teil der Welt, dass man unbedingt wissen will, wie es mit den vielen Protagonisten weitergeht. Die Namen der Charaktere und Orte verwirren Anfangs, doch ein Stammbaum und eine Landkarte im Inneren des Buches helfen weiter 😉
Another extraordinary book – at least for my taste in books. Historical novels are not really my cup of tea, but this family history of the early settlers of Greenland, told in the style of Nordic sagas, somehow did it for me. The book is very long and spans over several decades and generations. But once you are through the first third, you are so deeply immersed in the world, the suffering and the struggle for survival in this isolated part of the world, that you desperately want to know what happens next with the many protagonists. The names of the characters and places confuse at first, but a family tree and a map inside the book help further 😉
EXPECTATION – ANNA HOPE
Ein moderner Roman der die Geschichte und das Erwachsenwerden von 3 Frauen beschreibt. Es geht um Freundschaft, Liebe und Familie aber auch um die Beziehung zu sich selbst und welche Vorstellungen man für die eigene Zukunft hat. Ich habe tatsächlich etwas gebraucht um rein zu kommen, doch nach ca. der Hälfte hat es mich nicht mehr losgelassen.
A modern novel that describes the history and coming of age of 3 women. It is about friendship, love and family, but also about the relationship with yourself and what ideas you have for your own future. I actually needed a bit to get into it, but after I was about halfway through it didn’t let me go.
THE DREAMERS – KAREN THOMPSON WALKER
Passend zum ersten Lockdown habe ich diese Dystopie über eine mysteriöse Krankheit, die alle schlafen lässt, gelesen. Was noch vor einem Jahr als unwahrscheinliche Story geklungen hätte, las sich im Anbetracht von COVID-19 schockierend echt. Ausgangssperren, Kontaktbeschränkungen, Lebensmittelknappheiten und fehlende Heilung. Trotz der realistischen Komponente und dem Spiegel für das Leben im April 2020, hat mir das Buch sehr gut gefallen und ich habe es innerhalb von 2 Tagen gelesen.
In keeping with the first Lockdown, I read this dystopia about a mysterious disease that puts everyone to sleep. What would have sounded like an unlikely story a year ago read shockingly real in light of COVID-19. Curfews, contact restrictions, food shortages and lack of healing. Despite the realistic component and the mirror for life in April 2020, I really enjoyed the book and read it in 2 days.
THE INCENDIARIES – R.O.KWON
Dieser Roman handelt von einer jungen Frau, die während ihrer Zeit im College in eine Sekte eintritt und à la Charles Manson vom Anführer zu immer brutaleren Taten angestiftet wird. Und ihrem Freund, der ihr versucht zu helfen und am Ende alles nur noch schlimmer macht. Die Prämisse hat mir sehr gut gefallen, die Story an sich war dann jedoch stellenweise langweilig.
This novel is about a young woman who joins a cult during her time in college and is incited à la Charles Manson by the leader to ever more brutal acts. And her boyfriend, who tries to help her and ends up making things worse. I liked the premise a lot, but the story itself was boring in places.
WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING – DELIA OWENS
Ein weiteres Lieblingsbuch von 2020 ist Where the Crawdads Sing. Der Roman ist wundervoll geschrieben, mit einer Einfühlsamkeit, die ich schon lange nicht mehr in einem Buch entdeckt habe. Die Protagonistin Kya verzaubert einen und die Kulisse des Marsh in North Carolina wirkt zum Greifen nah. Die Geschichte ist herzzerreißend, wunderschön und spannend und ein absoluter Genuss. Große Empfehlung!
Another favorite book of 2020 is Where the Crawdads Sing. The novel is beautifully written, with an empathy I haven’t discovered in a book in a long time. The protagonist, Kya, enchants you and the setting of the Marsh in North Carolina feels close enough to touch. The story is heartbreaking, beautiful and suspenseful and an absolute delight. Big recommendation!
EDUCATED – TARA WESTOVER
Eine weitere Biografie, die ebenfalls mehr an einen normalen Roman erinnert, war Educated. Die Geschichte handelt von Tara, die in einer „Survivalist“ Familie aufwächst und ihre Kindheit mit Kochen, Arbeiten auf dem Hof und der Bibel verbringt. Zwischen Zeitsprüngen im Leben von Tara springt es auch ab und zu in die Geschichten von ihren Eltern, Großeltern und Geschwistern und deren Leben und Umgang, mit der Religion und Lebenseinstellung. Obwohl es wirklich grandios geschrieben ist, hat mich das Buch nicht gefesselt. Zu sehr habe ich mich über Tara und ihre Familie aufgeregt und vielleicht habe ich auch zu sehr mit Tara und ihrem Leid und fehlenden Versuchen auszubrechen gefühlt.
Another biography, also more reminiscent of a regular novel, was Educated. The story is about Tara, who grows up in a „survivalist“ family and spends her childhood cooking, working on the farm, and reading the Bible. In between time jumps in Tara’s life, it also occasionally jumps into the stories of her parents, grandparents and siblings and their lives and dealings, with religion and outlook on life. Although it is really great writing, the book did not captivate me. I was too upset with Tara and her family and perhaps I felt too much for Tara and her suffering and lack of attempts to break free.
IN THE DISTANCE – HERNAN DIAZ
Ein sehr ruhiger, leiser und dennoch spannender Roman war In the Distance. Die Geschichte eines jungen, der aus dem fernen Norden nach Amerika kommt, seinen Bruder verliert und durch das halbe Land reist, auf der Suche ihn zu finden. Er ist viel alleine und diese Einsamkeit wird unendlich gut herüber gebracht. Aber auch die Anstrengung die der Protagonist hat, bei dem Versuch, in diesem fremden Land zurecht zu kommen, in der Wüste oder im Eis zu überleben und seinen Bruder zu finden, kommt sehr glaubhaft rüber.
A very calm, quiet, yet suspenseful novel was In the Distance. The story of a young boy who comes to America from the far north, loses his brother, and travels halfway across the country in search of him. He is alone a lot and that loneliness is brought across infinitely well. But also the effort the protagonist has in trying to get along in this foreign land, to survive in the desert or in the ice and to find his brother, comes across very credibly.
EXIT RACISM – TUPOKA OGETTE
In Anbetracht der #BlackLivesMatter Bewegung und dem Diskurs rund um das Thema Rassismus, wollte ich mich unbedingt weiterbilden. Ich habe bereits einige Bücher darüber gelesen, jedoch oft nur diese, die über Rassismus in den USA oder der UK berichten. Dies war das erste Buch, das über Rassismus in Deutschland handelte und es hat den Nerv getroffen. Tupoka Ogette konfrontiert den Leser mit dem eigenen Rassismus, den man meist nicht kennt und vor allem nicht wahrhaben möchte. Ein absolutes Muss, wenn man sich mehr mit dem Thema und der Stellung von sich selbst in der Diskussion auseinander setzten möchte.
In times of the #BlackLivesMatter movement and the discourse around the topic of racism, I was eager to educate myself. I’ve read a few books about it before, but often only those about racism in the US or UK. This was the first book that was about racism In Germany and it struck a nerve. Tupoka Ogette confronts the reader with their own racism, which most people don’t know about and especially don’t want to acknowledge. An absolute must read if you want to deal more with the topic and the position of yourself in the discussion.
BETWEEN THE WORLD AND ME – TA-NEHISI COATS
Der Juli ging bei mir direkt weiter mit einer Auto-Biografie zum Thema Rassismus. Ein Vater schreibt seinem Sohn und berichtet über sein Leben, die Hürden und das Schwarz sein in Amerika. Ein sehr bewegendes Buch.
July continued right along for me with an auto-biography on the subject of racism. A father writes to his son and talks about his life, the hurdles and being black in America. A very moving book.
TROTZDEM – FERDINAND VON SCHIRACH, ALEXANDER KLUGE
Ein Journalist und ein Anwalt schreiben sich über WhatsApp und diskutieren die Pandemie, die Rechtslage und das eingeschränkte Leben. Ein kurzweiliger Exkurs, der jedoch sehr viel Spaß gemacht hat zu lesen und tolle Parallelen und Vergleiche zieht.
A journalist and a lawyer chat on WhatsApp and discuss the pandemic, the legal situation and restricted life. An entertaining digression, but very fun to read and draws great parallels and comparisons.
QUEENIE – CANDICE CARTY-WILLIAMS
Dieser Roman handelt von der mid-20erin Queenie und ihrem Leben. Ihr Freund hat sich frisch von ihr getrennt, sie muss im überteuerten London eine neue Wohnung finden und zweifelt an allem in ihrem Leben – ob Job oder Freunde, Aussehen oder Sex Leben. Erfrischend, lustig und realistisch ist dieser Roman und eine wahre Freude zu lesen.
This novel is about mid-20s Queenie and her life. Her boyfriend has just split up with her, she has to find a new apartment in overpriced London and doubts everything in her life – job, friends, looks and sex life. Refreshing, funny and realistic, this novel is a real pleasure to read.
REBECCA – DAPHNE DU MAURIER
Rebecca ist ein Klassiker der Literaturgeschichte und bevor der Netflix Film herauskam, wollte ich das Buch gelesen haben. Und das war auch gut so, denn der Film kommt die Essenz des Buches in keinster Weise einfangen. Ein junges, verunsichertes Mädchen, das keine Ahnung von Welt hat und einem reichen Herren in die Ehe und in ein eintöniges und kontrolliertes Leben auf einem riesen Gut folgt. Gefangen in dem großen Haus, das voller Erinnerungen der verstorbenen Ehefrau und Vorgängerin der Protagonistin – Rebecca – schwingt, erkennt man als Leser schnell, dass sie von allen manipuliert wird und das Traumleben, das ihr an der Côte d’Azur noch vorgegaukelt wurde, im regnerischen England zu zerplatzen droht.
Rebecca is a classic in literary history, and before the Netflix movie came out, I wanted to have read the book. And that was a good thing, because the movie doesn’t capture the essence of the book in any way. A young, insecure girl who has no idea about the world and follows a rich gentleman into marriage and a monotonous and controlled life on a giant estate. Trapped in the large house that resonates with memories of the protagonist’s deceased wife and predecessor Rebecca, the reader quickly realizes that she is being manipulated by everyone and that the dream life she was led to believe she had on the Côte d’Azur is in danger of shattering in rainy England.
THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES – SUZANNE COLLINS
Endlich habe ich auch das Prequel der Hunger Games Reihe gelesen. Auch wenn ich die Hunger Games Bücher besser fand, war es doch ein sehr spannendes Buch und vor allem ein toller Einblick in die Psyche eines jungen Mannes, der vom rechten Weg abkommt.
I finally read the prequel to the Hunger Games series. Even though I found the Hunger Games books better, it was a very exciting book and above all a great insight into the psyche of a young man who strays from the right path.
DER DRACHENLÄUFER – KHALED HOSSEINI
Mit dem Drachenläufer habe ich bereits im September begonnen, aber den Großteil erst im Oktober gelesen, daher habe ich das Buch in diesen Monat sortiert. Grund für die Verzögerung beim Lesen: die schwere und anstrengende Geschichte. Der Roman ist grandios geschrieben, doch war sehr anstrengend für mich. Vor allem in Anbetracht der vielen Dramen im echten Leben und dem bevorstehenden zweiten Lockdown, hat sich eine derart dramatische Geschichte nicht schnell gelesen. Dennoch ein unglaublich starker und toller Roman.
I started Kite Runner back in September, but didn’t read most of it until October, so I sorted the book into this month. Reason for the delay in reading: the heavy and exhausting story. The novel is terrifically written, but was very exhausting for me. Especially considering all the real life drama and the upcoming second lockdown, such a dramatic story did not read quickly. Still, an incredibly strong and great novel.
DIE VERMESSUNG DER WELT – DANIEL KEHLMANN
Ein netter Roman über Humboldt und dessen Exkursionen und Entdeckungen, der zeitweise überaus amüsant ist und sich schnell liest auch wenn sich die Geschichte für mich an manchen Stellen etwas gezogen hat.
A nice novel about Humboldt and his excursions and discoveries, which is at times extremely amusing and reads quickly even if the story dragged a bit for me at some points.
SOPHIA, DER TOD UND ICH – THEES UHLMANN
Dieser Roman war ebenfalls eine nette Abwechslung zu den vielen dramatischen und anstrengenden Büchern, die ich davor gelesen habe. Doch daher auch weniger beeindruckend und er ist mir nicht lange in Erinnerung geblieben.
This novel was also a nice change from the many dramatic and exhausting books I read before it. But therefore also less impressive and it didn’t stay in my memory for long.
TALES OF HORROR – EDGAR ALLAN POE
In Vorbereitung auf Halloween habe ich mir diesen Band voller Grusel-Geschichten von Edgar Allan Poe geholt. Ich liebe Poe und seine wirren Stories die mit so vielen Twists & Turns versehen sind, dass man manchmal zurück gehen muss. Das tolle an einer Geschichten-Sammlung ist es, dass man aus einer Vielzahl an Stories wählen und immer mal wieder eine lesen kann.
In preparation for Halloween, I picked up this volume full of scary stories by Edgar Allan Poe. I love Poe and his jumbled stories that have so many twists & turns that sometimes you have to go back. The great thing about a story collection is that you can choose from a variety of stories and read one every now and then.
PLAIN BAD HEROINES – EMILY M. DANFORTH
Die Prämisse dieses Romans liest sich nach genau meinem Geschmack: 2 Geschichten die in unterschiedlichen Zeiten spielen und doch verwoben sind. Doch im Ganzen hin und her und dem Versuch, alles miteinander in Verbindung zu setzten, hat dieses Buch etwas an Spannung für mich verloren. Die Geschichte braucht unendlich lang, um an Fahrt zu gewinnen und wird zwischendurch immer mit langweiligen Passagen geschmückt, die es nicht unbedingt gebraucht hätte. Dennoch eine nette Grusel-Geschichte für Halloween.
The premise of this novel reads exactly to my liking: 2 stories set in different times, yet interwoven. But in the whole back and forth and trying to connect everything, this book lost some of its tension for me. The story takes an interminable amount of time to gain momentum and is always adorned with boring passages in between that it didn’t really need. Still, a nice creepy story for Halloween.
IT IS WOOD, IT IS STONE – GABRIELLA BURNHAM
Auch dies war ein Roman, der sich spannender angehört hat, als er tatsächlich war. Doch der Schauplatz eines Sommers in Brasilien war eine schöne Alternative zum grauen November.
This was another novel that sounded more exciting than it actually was. But the setting of a summer in Brazil was a nice alternative to the gray November.
BEACH READ – EMILY HENRY
Eine seichte Liebeskomöde, mit genau dem Drama was man erwartet und natürlich einem Happy End! Genau das ist Beach Read. Doch nach dem anstrengendem Jahr und vor allem auch harter Literatur für mich, wollte ich das Jahr mit einer lustigen Lektüre ausklingen lassen. Literarisch keine Großtat aber dennoch Balsam für die Seele und auch wenn man nicht am Strand ist ein tolles Buch.
A shallow romantic comedy, with exactly the drama you expect and of course a happy ending! That’s exactly what Beach Read is. But after the exhausting year and especially hard literature for me, I wanted to end the year with a funny read. Literary no feat but still balm for the soul and even if you are not on the beach a great book.
DEATH IN HER HANDS – OTTESSA MOSHFEGH
Eine ältere Dame findet eine Notiz, die über das Verschwinden und den Tod eines ihr unbekannten Mädchens informiert. Wer war sie und ist sie wirklich Tod? Oder ist es nur ein Streich? Damit beginnt das Buch, doch es wird sehr schnell zu viel mehr und die Grenzen zwischen Realität und Imagination der Protagonistin verschwimmen. Ein toller Roman den ich sehr schnell gelesen habe, nur das Ende hat mir nicht ganz so gut gefallen.
An elderly lady finds a note informing about the disappearance and death of a girl unknown to her. Who was she and is she really dead? Or is it just a prank? This is how the book begins, but it very quickly becomes much more and the lines between reality and the protagonist’s imagination become blurred. A great novel that I read very quickly, only the ending I did not like quite as much.
DRIFTS – KATE ZAMBRENO
Ein Buch das mehr Stream of Conciousness ist als wirkliche Erzählung, voll mit Literatur Zitaten und wirren Geschichten. Sehr experimentell und leider nicht so ganz mein Fall.
A book that is more stream of consciousness than real narrative, full of literature quotes and confused stories. Very experimental and unfortunately not quite my cup of tea.
JUGEND OHNE GOTT – ÖDÖN VON HORVÁTH
Das Jahr beendet habe ich mit diesem Klassiker. Ein toller Roman, der viele Dinge sehr gut beleuchtet, doch natürlich etwas in die Jahre gekommen ist.
I ended the year with this classic. A great novel that sheds light on many things very well, but of course is a bit outdated.
