MADRID IMPRESSIONS

Manche Leute würden sagen, dass es verrückt ist Mitten im August nach Madrid zu reisen. Für jemanden der City Trips und Sommer so gerne mag wie ich, ist es allerdings der perfekte Mix! Und so war ich über ein verlängertes Wochenende in Spaniens Hauptstadt um die Sonne und ganz viel Tinto Verano zu genießen…

Some people might say that travelling to Madrid in the middle of August is crazy. But for someone that loves both city trips and summer holidays, this is the perfect mix! And so I went on a long weekend to the capital of Spain to enjoy some heat and a lot of Tinto Verano…

GRAN VIA

Die wohl bekannteste Straße Madrids: der grandiose Boulevard Namens Gran Via. Entlang beeindruckender Massivbauten aus dem 20. Jahrhundert zieht sich die Gran Via von dem bekannten Metropolis-Haus, über den Teléfonica Turm bis hin zum Plaza de España. Während von Außen noch die Belle Epoque herrscht, ist im Inneren der Häuser die Moderne längst angekommen: wer in Madrid shoppen will geht definitiv auf die Gran Via.

Probably the most famous street in Madrid: the grandiose boulevard called Gran Via. Along impressive massive buildings from the 20th century, the Gran Via stretches from the famous Metropolis House, over the Teléfonica Tower to the Plaza de España. While the Belle Epoque still reigns from the outside, the modern age has long since arrived inside the houses: those who want to shop in Madrid definitely go to the Gran Via.

ALTSTADT / OLD TOWN

Madrids Altstadt ist ein tolles Wirrwarr an kleinen, verwinkelten Straßen und Maurischen Häusern. Südlich der Puerta del Sol (Tür zu Sonne) gelegen, bietet die engen Gassen nicht nur den nötigen Schatten sondern auch etwas Entspannung von der vollen Shopping Meile Gran Via. Highlights sind neben dem TIO PEPE Leuchtschild auf der Puerta del Sol auch der Plaza Mayor – der älteste Marktplatz Madrids – sowie das Rathaus.

Madrid’s old town is a great jumble of small, winding streets and Moorish houses. Located south of the Puerta del Sol (door to sun), the narrow streets not only offer the necessary shade but also some relaxation from the full shopping mile Gran Via. Highlights are beside the TIO PEPE Leutchschild on the Puerta del Sol also the Plaza Mayor – the oldest market place of Madrid – as well as the city hall.

REAL: PALACIO REAL – TEATRO REAL – CATEDRAL DE SANTA MARÍA LA REAL DE LA ALMUDENA

Westlich der Gran Via und Puerta del Sol befindet sich die Oper aka Teatro Real. Und direkt dahinter erstreckt sich der riesige Kalkstein Palast und Sitz des spanischen Königshauses: Palacio Real. Gegenüber des Haupteingangs des 50m Langen Palasts ragt die Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena prunkvoll hervor.

West of the Gran Via and Puerta del Sol is the opera aka Teatro Real. And directly behind it is the huge limestone palace and seat of the Spanish royal house: Palacio Real. Opposite the main entrance of the 50m long palace, the Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena stands out splendidly.

PARQUE DEL OESTE

Oberhalb des Palacio Real erstreckt sich auf einem Hügel der große Park Parque del Oeste. Darin versteckt sich der ägyptische Tempel Templo de Debot der Spanien von Ägypten als Staatsgeschenk gemacht wurde und auch die Seilbahn Teleferico, die über den Fluss Manzanares in den noch viel größeren Park Cerro Garabitas führt. Vom Park hat man außerdem einen grandiosen Ausblick auf den Palast und die Kirche.

Above the Palacio Real, on a hill, the large Parque del Oeste extends. Hidden inside is the Egyptian temple Templo de Debot, which was given to Spain by Egypt as a state gift, and also the cable car Teleferico that leads across the river Manzanares to the much larger park Cerro Garabitas. Also you have a great view across to the palace and church.

SALAMANCA & PARQUE RETIRO

Auf der anderen Seite der Stadt im Osten liegt ein weiterer großer Park: der Parque Retiro. Ein perfekter und wunderschöner Ort, um der Hitze zu entfliehen und sich im Schatten zu entspannen. Oder man mietet ein Boot auf dem kleinen künstlichen See oder besucht eine der Ausstellung in einem der Paläste im Park. Ich empfehle dringend den Besuch des wunderschönen Palacio de Cristal – des Kristall Palasts. Im Norden des Parks liegt ein weiterer berühmter Stadtteil Madrids: Salamanca. Dieses Viertel unterscheidet sich so sehr von den kleinen und verwinkelten Straßen der Altstadt, denn dieses viertel ist strickt in Quadraten aufgeteilt. Neben der großartigen Architektur des Stadtteils selbst ist auch die Hauptstraße Salamancas die Calle Serano bemerkenswert: Es ist die Luxus-Einkaufsmeile in Madrid!

On the opposite of the town in the east lies another big park: the Parque Retiro. It’s a beautiful spot to flee the heat and relax in the shades. But you can also rent a boat on the small artificial lake or visit an exhibition in one of the palaces inside the park. I highly recommend visiting the beautiful Palacio de Cristal – the Cristal Palace. Up north of the park is another famous district of Madrid: Salamanca. It is so different to the small and criss-crossy streets of the old town as it is composed in strict squares. Apart from the great architecture of the district itself, the Main Street in Salamanca Calle Serano is also noteworthy: it’s the luxury shopping mile in Madrid!

Malasaña & CHUECA

Das letzte Viertel das ich ansprechen möchte ist das neue In Viertel Malasaña / Chueca. Hipster und Pride Viertel bietet es neben tollen kleinen Boutiquen vor allem eine große Vielzahl an Bars. Aber natürlich kann auch hier geshoppt werden: auf der Calle de Fuencarral.

The last quarter I would like to address is THE new quarter Malasaña / Chueca. Hipster and Pride quarter it offers beside great small boutiques above all a large variety of bars. But of course you can also shop here: on the Calle de Fuencarral.

APERITIVO
