Ich liebe den Herbst! Die warmen Farben, das goldene Licht und die romantische Stimmung, die er verbreitet. Und da wir alle nur zu gut wissen, wie schnell der Winter kommt, versuche ich die schönen Herbsttage so gut es geht zu nutzen.

Wenn also ein solches Wochenende vor der Tür steht, heißt es nichts wie raus in die Natur um die letzten warmen Sonnenstrahlen zu genießen!

I love fall! The warm colours, the golden light and the romantic mood it spreads. And since we all know how quickly winter is approaching, I always try to make the most of those nice fall days.

So whenever one of those beautiful weekends lies ahead, it means getting out into nature in order to savour those last warm rays of sunshine.

Da im Gebirge um diese Jahreszeit bereits der erste Schnee gefallen sein kann, die Temperaturen auf diesen Höhenmetern nicht mehr so sehr steigen und generell die Sonnenstunden immer weniger werden, ist es sinnvoll eine Wanderung unterhalb der hochalpinen Gebiete zu wählen.

Given that at this time of year the first snow might have already fallen in the mountains, the temperatures won’t rise that much in these hights and generally, there aren’t that many hours of sunshine, it makes more sense to go for a hike below those high alpine areas.

Im letzten Jahr ging meine Herbstwanderung in das Murnauer Moos. Dieses Jahr stand der vielleicht schönste See der bayerischen Alpen: der Eibsee.

Last year my fall-hike was around the Murnauer Moor. This year my destination was to the perhaps most beautiful lake in the Alps: the Eibsee.

Am Fuße der Zugspitze liegt sich dieses pittoreske Meisterwerk. In 1.000m Höhe erstreckt sich der 1,796 km² große See. Das kristallklare türkisfarbene Wasser befindet sich in Mitten einer herrlichen Alpenlandschaft.

At the bottom of the Zugspitze sits this picturesque masterpiece. At 1.000m height lies the 1,796 km² big lake. The crystal clear turquoise water is located in the middle of the most beautiful alpine landscape.

Die Anfahrt über Garmisch-Patenkirchen mit dem Auto geht, vorausgesetzt es gibt keine Staus, recht schnell von München aus. In Grainau, direkt neben der, seit April 2017 stillgelegten, Eibseebahn, befindet sich der große Parkplatz, von dem aus man direkt den Rundweg um den Eibsee starten kann.

The journey there is relatively easy: from Munich, you pass through Garmisch-Partenkirchen with the destination Grainau. The car park is located directly next to the old Eibsee cablecar railway, that was closed down April this year. From there you can easily start the walk around the lake.

Da es ein Rundweg ist, kann man sich aussuchen, ob man im oder entgegen des Uhrzeigersinns laufen will. Wir haben uns für die letztere Variante entschieden.

Given that it’s a circular walk, you can either go clockwise or counterclockwise. We decided to go with the later version.

Einmal angekommen kommt man aus dem Staunen gar nicht mehr heraus. Der grünlich schimmernde See in dessen Wasser sich das einmalige Zugspitzpanorama spiegelt ist wirklich atemberaubend. Wenn dann auch noch das Wetter mitspielt und die Sonne richtig steht, scheint das Glück perfekt.

Once you start your walk, you won’t be able to stop gaping in astonishment. The green-shimmery lake whose water is reflecting the unique panorama of the Zugspitze is truly amazing. Especially when the weather is perfect and the sun stands at the right place…

Der Rundweg führt immer am See entlang, doch oft genug biegt er vom direkten Ufer ab und führt steil hinein in den Wald. Zwischen 2 und 2,5 Stunden dauert dieser Ausflug – je nachdem wie viele Fotos währenddessen geschossen werden…

The walk is always along the lake, but every now and then it leaves the shore and heads steeply into the forest. The tour takes about 2 to 2,5 hours – depending on how many pictures you take throughout…

Wer den See lieber auf dem Wasser erkundet, kann dem mit (Motor-)Boot, Kanu oder Stand-up-Paddle nachgehen. Das ganze lohnt sich, denn die 8 Inseln des Eibsees sind nur über Wasser erreichbar.

If you’d rather discover the lake on the water, you can do that by boat, canoe or stand-up paddle. It’s a great decision, given that the 8 beautiful islands on the Eibsee are only reached via water.

Am Ende laden Seerestaurant und Biergarten zum Verweilen am direkten Seeufer ein.
Wer danach immer noch nicht genug hat, kann vom Eibsee mit der Bayerischen Zugpsitzbahn weiter hinauf, in Richtung des höchsten Gipfel Deutschlands.

Once you’re done with the hike, there is a beautiful lake restaurant and a beer garden where you can linger a little bit longer and enjoy the beautiful landscape. If you’re still in the mood to be adventurous, you can jump into the Bavarian Zugspitz-train and head in the direction to the highest peak of Germany: the Zugspitze.
