WEßLINGER SEE – FÜNFSEENLAND

In Bayern haben wir das Glück, mit einer Vielzahl an Feiertagen gesegnet zu sein. Besonders erfreulich sind diese Tage, wenn sie auf einen Wochentag fallen und man so unter der Woche eine kleine Auszeit bekommt.

Der erste November, auch als Allerheiligen bekannt, ist eben so ein Tag.

Doch ist der erste November noch in anderer Hinsicht etwas besonders. Denn es ist meist einer der letzten schönen und vor allem warmen Herbsttage in Bayern. Auch dieses Jahr scheint es keine Ausnahme zu sein, denn kaum war der erste um, wurde es richtig kalt und Schnee ist auch nicht fern.

Daher eignet er sich umso besser – wenn das Wetter es denn zulässt – für einen Ausflug in die Natur.

 

In Bavaria, we are lucky to have plenty of bank holidays that are especially nice, when they appear in the middle of the week so you get a day off busy schedules or work.

The first of November, also known as All Saints’ Day, is one of those days. And for me, this day is even more special, since it sort of marks the last day of fall – or at least the last warm and sunny fall day. Since mostly – and this year is no exception – it starts getting really cold and even snows right afterward. That’s why this day is perfect for making one last trip into nature.

Für eine richtige Wanderung war es mir dann aber doch etwas zu kalt… Daher habe ich mich mit ein paar Freunden zusammen getan und auf den Weg ins Fünfseenland gemacht. Dieses Mal ging es an den kleinsten der fünf Seen: den Weßlinger See. 

Even though I love me some hikes – especially in the beginning of fall – it is now definitely too cold for me to climb up a mountain. So some friends and I decided to make a little trip to one of the so-called “five lake land”, where five beautiful lakes lie extremely close to each other. This time we went to the smallest of the five: the Weßlinger lake.

Etwas versteckt liegt dieser See in der Gemeinde Weßling, nur 30km von München entfernt und eine knappe Halbestunde Autofahrt – und doch für viele Münchner unbekannt. 

Der See bietet einen Rundweg den man – je nach Tempo – in 30 umrundet hat. Zwar dauert es nicht sehr lange, doch ist der See besonders im Herbst wunderbar anzuschauen.

This lake lies a little bit hidden, in the community of Weßling, only 30 km away from Munich and about a half hour drive – but still pretty unknown.

What’s nice about this lake is that the path is always along the bank. That way you get to spot the lake from different angles and different lights. It takes about 30 minutes to walk around the lake once and even though this really isn’t long, the view of the lake really is beautiful – especially during fall.

Die Bäume die von allen Seiten den See umzäunen sind in gold-roten Farben gedeckt und wenn auch noch der Himmel blau ist, die Sonne scheint und das Thermometer über 10 Grad anzeigt, ist dieser kleine aber feine Spaziergang eine wirkliche Augenweide. Diese malerische Kulisse ist auch vielen Künstlern nicht verborgen geblieben. Daher tauft sich die Gemeinde Weßling auch gerne als „Künstlerdorf“ – zurecht, denn große Namen wie Carl Schuch oder Pierre-August Renoir haben sich an dem Ufer niedergelassen um das Naturspektakel auf Leinwand festzuhalten oder sich zu inspirieren. Aber auch für andere Berühmtheiten war dieser See ein Rückzugsort. So verbrachte der Arzt und Psychologe Alois Alzheimer während seiner Forschungsphase in München viele Tage in Weßlingen, sodass er am Seeufer eine Villa kaufte. Diese und auch die Gasse, in welcher sich die Villa befindet sind nun nach ihm benannt.

If the trees surrounding the lake on all sides are shimmering red and gold, the sky is blue, the sun is shining and the temperature is above 10 degrees (Celcius), then you have the most magical view. This picturesque scenery hasn’t stayed hidden to artists from around the world. It’s no surprise that the little town Weßlingen likes to call itself “artist’s village”. Known painters like Carl Schuch and Pierre-August Renoir went there to take in the beautiful backdrop and be inspired. But not only artists used the Weßlinger lake to get some quiet time, also other renowned people stayed there and even made it their home. One is the doctor and psychologist Alois Alzheimer, who discovered the disease that’s been named after him. During his research period in Munich he often went to the lake and ended up buying a house at the shore. This Villa, as well as the road it is located on later, were re-named to “Villa Alzheimer” and “Alzheimer Valley”. 

Im Sommer ist der 700 Meter lange See, der nur gerade mal 18 Hektar Fläche umfasst, eine perfekte Oase zum Schwimmen. An warmen Frühlings- oder Herbsttagen eignet er sich für ein Picknick. Wer sich lieber bedienen lassen will, kann eines der zwei Cafés besuchen, die mit einem Biergarten direkt am See das Essen versüßen.

During the summertime the lake, which is 700 meters long, is the perfect oasis to cool down and go for a swim. During spring and fall, you can use the bank to have a nice picnic. Don’t worry if you haven’t brought any food yourself. There are two nice cafés right by the shore.

Er ist zwar der kleinste der Fünf Seen aber dafür der nächste an München und eignet sich so besonders für spontane Ausflüge oder wenn man nur wenig Zeit hat und doch noch hinaus in die Natur will.

So even though the Weßlinger lake is the smallest of the five lakes it is the nearest one to Munich and therefore the perfect destination if you are spontaneous or only have a couple of hours to enjoy the nature.
